The Keys to glory: World number 19 American pulls off an almighty upset to become Australian Open champion
Madison Keys has claimed her first ever Grand Slam title after upsetting world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the Women’s singles final at Rod Laver Arena last night.
The world number 19 came into the match as a heavy underdog after just scraping through to beat world number 2 Iga Swiatek in a super tie breaker, to advance to her second ever Grand Slam final of her career.
The 29-year old American is the first woman since 2009 to defeat the world number one and world number two in successive matches to claim a Grand Slam title.
She opened up post game on the journey she had gone through to get to this point of her career, and how much finally winning a Grand Slam really means to her.
"I felt like from a pretty young age … if I never won a grand slam, then I wouldn't have lived up to what people thought I should have been," Keys said in her post game media conference.
"That was a pretty heavy burden to kind of carry around.
"So, I finally got to the point where I was proud of myself and proud of my career, with or without a grand slam."
The Australian Open wraps up on Sunday night where world number one and reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner takes on world number two Alexander Zverev in what anticipates to be a mouth watering Men’s final.
