The Kiwis are preparing for a win or go home clash with Tonga in this weekend's Rugby League World Cup semi-final, with Sam Ackerman and Mitch James breaking down the team selection and the threats New Zealand will need to contain on the latest episode of The Finals Countdown.
The return of Kalyn Ponga and Phoenix Crossland are among the names discussed after being included in the reserves. The hosts also look at how the Kiwis can limit Tonga’s attacking threats, with Warriors players Demitric Vaimauga and Leka Halasima identified as a players capable of turning the game.
Ackerman backs New Zealand to win a close semi-final, while the hosts reflect on the Kiwis’ lacklustre performance against Fiji and what needs to improve. Check the latest Kiwis vs Tonga odds on betcha ahead of kickoff.
The emotional atmosphere around the Pacific teams is another major talking point. Sam and Mitch discuss the intensity of Tonga versus Samoa, the extraordinary support from fans, and why the cameras couldn’t fully capture the feeling in the stands. While Ackerman says Kiwis versus Australia remains the best game, he describes the battle of the Pacific the most emotionally charged occasion.

The episode looks beyond the Kiwis, too. The hosts discuss how the Rugby League World Cup could include teams such as South Africa without creating lopsided contests, including the possibility of playing them as curtain-raisers.
They also revisit France’s clash with Lebanon and what it meant for the French players to represent their country despite the heartbreaking result and entering the tournament as outsiders.
The show also gives recognition to the Wheel Kiwis and their pride in representing New Zealand and performing the haka, as well as the Cook Islands’ difficult path through the tournament.
Sport Nation has live and free commentary of the Kiwis vs Tonga semi-final from 9pm Saturday on Sport Nation Extra only, with kick-off set for 10.05pm
