- Postecoglou has led Spurs to the Europa final
- His job has been in doubt all year
- It would be Spurs first Europe title since 1984
- He will take hom $4m if they qwin
If Ange Postecoglou comes good on his claim he would win a piece of silverware in his second year as Spurs manager, not only will he go a long way in silencing his relentless critics, but will pocket himself a cool $4 million.
Tottenham meet Manchester United in the Europa League final next week with history on the line for the Australian coach. Victory would hand the London club its first European trophy in over 40 years and first piece of silverware since the League Cup in 2008.
According to the UK Telegraph, victory over the Red Devils will pocket Postecoglou a 2-million-pound bonus ($4.1m).
It’s a bizarre situation for the 59-year-old whose tenure at the club has been questioned since last December as Tottenham’s Premier League campaign began to unravel.
Based on final ladder position, the club is set to record its worst top flight season in history under Postecoglou’s guidance this season with the Europa League seemingly his only lifeline.
Currently 17th with two matches to play, it is unlikely they will climb much higher though they are assured safety from relegation.
Varying reports in recent months have suggested that Postecoglou is a dead man walking and he will lose his job irrespective of the result against Manchester United, but victory and a $4 million bonus on the way plus any severance package may soften the blow of unemployment.
It won’t be easy against United with Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski ruled out of the match in Bilbao, the midfielder is set to undergo knee surgery after sustaining an injury against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
“We can confirm that Dejan Kulusevski suffered an injury to his right patella in our Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace last weekend,” a Tottenham statement said.
“Following further specialist consultation, the midfielder has undergone surgery today (Wednesday) and will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately.”
Tottenham take on Manchester United in the Europa League final on May 22 from 5am AEST.
