Why Webster backs the two all-rounder approach for Ashes
Australian Test all-rounder Beau Webster is hopeful that he can remain in the starting Test side despite talk that the national team selectors may go with one all-rounder for the Ashes series.
It has been a whirlwind 18 months for the Tasmanian all-rounder.
After being named the best player in the 2023/24 Sheffield Shield season, he would earn a call-up to the national test side for the 5th Test match against India at the start of the year.
From there, he has managed to keep his spot in the starting eleven, averaging 34 runs with the bat and 23 with the ball in the number six spot.
This is despite Cameron Green being brought back into the side for the World Test Championship Final after having surgery on his spine last October.
But despite the notion circling the team that there should only be one all-rounder, Webster believes that there is room for both Green and him in the Test XI.

“It’s a pretty obvious situation where you’ve got a guy like Cameron Green who wasn’t bowling, and that’s how I got my opportunity and potentially might have done better than they (the selectors) thought I would,” Webster noted on SEN Tassie’s Breakfast.
“And now they might have a tougher decision to make with that number six spot.
“I’m hoping that we can both fit in the team. I don’t see why, if we are the best six batters in the country, then I don’t see why having two all-rounders is a big no-no.
“If we're still scoring runs and performing with the bat, then I’m sure whatever we both bring with the ball is just an added bonus.
“So hopefully George and the selectors see it that way. But a few early runs in the Shield and a couple of wickets are always going to help.”
Looking ahead to this season’s summer of cricket, Webster is beyond excited just to have a chance of being selected for the series, which he regards as the pinnacle within the sport.
“It’s the pinnacle of our sport, the Ashes,” he said.
“I feel like if you can perform in Ashes cricket, whether it be home or away, I feel like it adds extra weight (to your legacy).
“To even be not just in the conversation but to be a real chance of playing in a home Ashes series, I’m pinching myself to be in this situation.”
Webster is set to begin his Shield campaign for Tasmania on October 4 against Queensland at Allan Border Field.
The Ashes will begin in Perth at Optus Stadium on November 21.
