The training partnership of Clinton Isdale, who teamed up with husband-and-wife duo Graeme and Debbie Rogerson in May this year were to the fore at Otaki on Saturday when they produced the quinella in the feature race on the day, the Jennian Homes Feilding Cup (2100m)
The team were represented by last start winner and race favourite Solidify ($6) with Knights Realm ($23) largely ignored as the second-string of their bow.
Nobody told Knights Realm that he wasn’t supposed to figure in the finish as he sat outside Exit Left, with the pair setting a farcically slow pace through the middle stages of the contest, before lifting the tempo for rider Jim Chung with 600m to run.
The well fancied Hastings visitor Psyclone swept to the front rounding the turn, however, Solidify began to chase hard one-off the fence while Knights Realm was still kicking strongly against the inside rail.
Knights Realm fought strongly to snatch the lead back and he wouldn’t be denied in the final few strides, winning by a length from his team-mate, with just a neck to Psyclone who held out Freddie Time and Donnybrook to take third.
Isdale was rapt with the result and paid tribute to jockey Wiremu Pinn, who had given him some telling advice about the winner after riding him earlier in his career, that stopped him from scratching his charge due to the hard nature of the Good 3 surface.
“If you watched his run at Matamata (two starts ago) he missed the kick but stuck on good, then the other day he had cover three-wide and pulling his block off,” Isdale said.
“I was going to scratch the horse five minutes before the start today, but Wiremu Pinn always said he would go better on a decent track.
“It was a beautiful ride today (by Chung) and with Solidify running second it is good for the stable as we are going well and long may it continue.”
Bred and raced by Murray Nicholson under his MRN Breeding and Racing banner, Knights Realm has now won $272,750 in prizemoney from 34 career starts which have yielded four wins and 12 placings.
Today’s event was the fourth in the 2026/27 Prezzy Card Northern Country Cups Bonus Series which involves nine races where horses will earn points for finishing in the first four in races across the Series and concludes with the Prezzy Card Taupō Cup (2000m) finale on 29 December where a $50,000 winner-takes-all bonus is up for grabs.
Knights Realm joins Affordable, Sunset Boulevard and Astoria Brooke as co-leaders in the series, all on 5 points.
