Tasracing’s Sunday best bets at Hobart (08/11)
Matt Reid • November 8th, 2025 12:00 pm
Saturday racing is in Hobart for the only time of the year. The annual seven-race program contains the $50,000 Goodwood Handicap, a traditional lead-up for the Listed Newmarket in a fortnight.
The rail moves out to +12m after being at +8m on Tuesday, where the track was upgraded from a heavy 8 to a soft 7 after two races.
The track is likely to be in the soft range for Saturday's card.
Best bet
Race 2 – 9. Don Turboas
Don Turboas will have his first start on his home track after making his debut in Devonport two months ago. That run was full of merit, finishing second behind Prince of Khatun, who has run well in subsequent outings. He draws wide here, but there isn’t much pace in the race on paper, and the wide draw may mean fresh ground after they raced here on Tuesday. I’d be surprised if there isn’t good market support.
Next best
Race 3 – 3. Timely Needs
Timely Needs was a sectional star last start, rattling home from back and wide to run third behind The Pirate Queen. That winner ran well again in a better grade on Tuesday, and on debut, Timely Needs ran into one who looks well above average. The 3yo draws low for the first time in his career, enabling him to race handier to the speed. I expect him to run very well.
Best value
Race 5 – 2. Al Maximus
In a hard race, I expect Al Maximus will be over the odds. His two wins have been over 1900m and 2100m, so it’s fair to say his two runs back from a spell have been over unsuitable distances. That said, he finished on the heels of the placegetters last time, with the beaten margin unfair. Up to a mile is a positive, as is Jackson Radley claiming 3kg on the card, which sees Al Maximus drop 4kg from last start. Worth an each-way play.
