The Melbourne Renegades have stunned Big Bash fans across the country after they defeated the Perth Scorchers by four wickets overnight.
Perth set out a very gettable score in the first innings, posting 147 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 20 overs.
Mitch Marsh’s return to the Scorchers side was short lived with bat in hand, as he was dismissed LBW with the first ball of his innings.
Ashton Agar produced a brave 51 not out for the Scorchers to try and apply pressure on the Renegades late, as well as make up for the disappointing performances from Marsh, Cooper Connolly (0 off 2 balls) and Ashton Turner (8 off 13 balls).
The bowling figures of 2/22 for the captain Will Sutherland and 3/27 from Adam Zampa helped keep the score within arms reach for the Melbourne side who were trying to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Renegades could not have started worse when they came out to bat though, when Tim Seifert was dismissed for a duck after facing only four balls.
With the very next ball, Jake Fraser-McGurk, who had been demoted from the opening position, was sent packing for 0 and the Renegades were now 2/0 in the first over of their run chase.
It got worse from there, as suddenly after 4.3 overs, the Renegades were in a spot of bother as they now had a score of 4/10.
Then came the skipper Will Sutherland, who courageously stood tall as any captain would do, posting 70 runs off 45 balls before being dismissed with an over remaining and the Renegades only needing 11 runs to win.
Tom Rogers, who also batted superbly, had the honours of capping off his impressive innings of 49 not out by hitting the winnings runs with two balls remaining, giving the Renegades one of their best wins in franchise history.
Melbourne will now turn their attention to another must win game, where they play the bottom of the ladder Melbourne Stars on Sunday.
As for the Scorchers, they’ll be looking to bounce back from this loss when they travel to take on the ladder leading Sydney Sixers in a do or die clash on Saturday afternoon.
