On Saturday Jamie Melham made history, becoming the first female jockey ever to win a Caulfield Cup.
Melham won the 2400m Group 1 on the Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained Half Yours and Calvin couldn’t have been prouder of watching his long-time friend Melham make history.
Calvin McEvoy has had a long relationship with Melham, dating back to Melham’s apprenticeship days for McEvoy Mitchell Racing. Also, when Calvin joined the partnership with his dad Tony, the Caulfield Cup winning jockey was their stable rider.
“I remember when she was our stable rider in Adelaide,” McEvoy reminisced on RSN’s Correct Weight.
“We were sending nicely bred horses around in maidens at Balaklava on a Wednesday with Jamie in the saddle.
“She’s ridden a lot of winners for us.
“It’s nice to see what she’s done since coming to Victoria.”
While Melham made history, the McEvoy’s also made history of their own – this was the father-son duo’s first Caulfield Cup victory as well.
When asked about how amazing it was to share the big moment with Melham, McEvoy summed it up perfectly.
“It’s very special, very special,” the Caulfield Cup winning trainer admitted.
“It was fantastic! She rode him (Half Yours) beautifully.
“People were coming a little bit on her form – class is permanent.
“You watch; she’ll go bang now for the rest of the spring.”
