"Rorting the game": Why Kerr could face civil action
Dolphins forward Josh Kerr has been slapped with a breach notice by the NRL for his comments suggesting referee Ashley Klein was a “double agent rorting the game”.
Kerr, who was named as Queensland’s 20th man for the third game of State of Origin, is lucky to not have a civil case against him, according to Ian Healy.
"I thought Ash Klein did a bit to try and, you know, even it up or make it a bit closer," Kerr said the day after the Origin decider in Sydney which the Maroons won to claim the 2025 series.
"We were sitting there going, 'it’s rorted, the game’s rorted'.
"I haven’t got the best eyesight at times, but I’m watching four passes and s---.
"We were all on the sideline just going, 'oh, no, it’s a double agent'".
Kerr’s comments were deemed to have been detrimental to the “best interests of the game” by NRL officials.
He now has five days to respond to the breach notice.
“He was dizzy from the night before I think,” Scott Sattler told Healy on SENQ Breakfast.
“From all reports he is one of the best teammates. I love Josh Kerr but they had to come down hard on him but god I loved it.”
Klein was subjected to widespread criticism for his officiating through the Origin series this year.
Issuing a word of warning to Kerr, Healy suggested he accept the breach notice and get the issue resolved before it became something bigger.
“I think he’d prefer an NRL sanction rather than a civil case,” Healy said.
“If I was a referee and had that said about me and my integrity questioned – trouble. Get it done and move one.”
