Rare dirty day for bundled De Minaur
Alex De Minaur is out of the French Open, losing in five sets to Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik overnight.
Australia’s highest ranked men’s player, who was the no.9 seed at Roland Garros, succumbed in the second round despite winning the opening two sets.
De Minaur held a 2-0 lead before capitulating to eventually go down 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
SEN tennis expert and The First Serve’s Brett Phillips said it was a rare dirty day for De Minaur.
“Not good for Alex De Minaur, it was very unlike him,” Phillips said on SEN Breakfast.
“We’re used to seeing him throw everything but the kitchen sink at his opposition. He was in the driver’s seat today, and then he had a lapse. Bublik sensed the opportunity and the whole game just swung.
“There just wasn’t the fight from De Minaur. He came into the press and talked about fatigue, burnout, the schedule, just feeling the pinch. He’s a guy that never makes excuses normally.
“It’s disappointing Alex couldn’t close that match out. It was one of his dirty days at the office. They don’t happen too often.”
De Minaur admitted he was fatigued and tired but will work with his team to understand why he crashed as he did.
“Look, I’m just tired. I’m tired mentally. I’m a little bit burnt out, if anything,” he said.
“In a way, the good thing is that what’s happened today is something like a miracle, right, in the sense that I’m not known for these types of performances, or (for) losing a match like this from two sets to love up. I’m probably known for the opposite, which is just being consistent and not really losing matches that I shouldn’t be losing.
“Saying all this, (I’ll) obviously have to have a hard chat with the team and analyse everything that’s been happening (and) kind of find a reason of why this happened today.”
Fellow Aussie Adam Walton also bowed out at Roland Garros, losing in straight sets to Andrey Rublev.
But Alexei Popyrin remains in the mix and will next take on Nuno Borges in the third round on Friday night.
In the women’s draw, new Aussie Daria Kasatkina defeated Leolia Jeanjean in straight sets to progress to the third round.
