“Proper horse”: The unbeaten import being tipped to beat risky Golden Eagle favourite
Form guru Mick Gannon believes French horse __Lazzat__ presents as a great betting option in the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) this weekend.

The four-year-old gelding, trained by Jerome Reynier, will race for the first time in Australia after racking up six wins from as many starts in his home country.

While the Japanese mare Ascoli Piceno is being tipped by many pundits to win the Golden Eagle at Rosehill on Saturday, Gannon believes she is a risk given her wide barrier 17.

He feels that jockey Joao Moreira is unlikely to boot Ascoli Piceno forward which will work against the talented Group 1 winner.

“I think she’s such a great risk though,” Gannon said on *SENTrack*.

“From barrier 17, a lack of speed in the race and is the kind of horse that they run on fast, hard tracks in quick time.

“From the wide draw, which could be adjusted if any scratchings, she’ll still be one of the widest gates for a horse that’s going to be restrained.

“I can’t see a scenario where they’re positive and go forward. Joao Moreira is not Nash Rawiller, her’s not Hughie Bowman or J-Mac. He’s not an ultra-aggressive jockey, he’s a great jockey, he’s one of the best we’ve ever seen of the modern era. But he’s not that way inclined.

“He’ll ride the horse to get into a rhythm and she’ll be really strong late. I think we’ll know her chances in the first 400 metres and I think she’ll be beyond midfield.”

While risking the favourite and preparing to bypass equal second favourite Joliestar, Gannon is keen to be with Lazzat who will jump from barrier 12 underneath Italian jockey Antonio Orani.

“Joliestar will be right there. Another horse that was screaming home in The Everest, she’ll be very hard to beat,” he continued.

“But I just don’t think she’ll get anywhere near this French horse. Lazzat is a proper, proper horse.

“He ran a huge career peak last start, he’ll put himself in the right spot and the speed map wins, intent wins in racing.

“In a race that lacks any real intent this is an easy bet to have at around the $7 mark.

“This will start favourite this thing.”

Lazzat has firmed from $7 to $5.50 with *Sportsbet* for the Golden Eagle which jumps in Sydney at 4:45pm AEDT.

Last year’s Golden Eagle was won by Japanese raider Obamburumai and local rider Josh Parr.
