Piastri's Miami win 45 years in the making
Oscar Piastri has extended his lead at the top of the F1 world championship to 16 points after a stunning victory in Miami.
The McLaren driver started from fourth on the grid but took advantage of early chaos to snatch the lead from Max Verstappen on lap 15.
He was in cruise control from that moment.
Victory is Piastri’s fourth in six races this season and sixth in his career. He also becomes the first Australian driver to win three consecutive races since Alan Jones in 1979.
“He really will be fighting for the world championship through all the stages,” Martin Brundle said on Sky F1 after the race.
Piastri’s masterclass and his teammate Lando Norris coming in second ensured McLaren extend their lead in the constructer’s championship.
Mercedes George Russell completed the podium.
“I won the race I really wanted to. The sprint was tricky but qualifying was one of my trickier sessions, so to come away with the win is an impressive result.
“There was argy bargy at turn one which helped me and I avoided Max coming through.
“From there I knew I had good pace.
“The hard stint I struggled a little bit so it was good I had built the gap. There’s still things to work on but I’m very very happy to be leaving Miami on top.
“It’s incredible the hard work that’s gone in, I think two years ago in Miami we were the slowest, we were getting lapped twice.”
Piastri is now firming as a favourite to win the world title this year. In doing so he would become the first Australian champion since 1980.
