Perth Wildcats to make shift to elite training base at $26m Warwick Stadium
Perth Wildcats are set to call Warwick Stadium home after the WA Labor Government’s $16 million pledge for a high-performance facility.
The pledge will help fund the elite training base and headquarters for the 10-time NBL champions, which includes three courts, strength and conditioning gym, recovery facilities, player and staff locker rooms, lounge and kitchen, staff offices and a large function room.
It will be a massive boost for the Wildcats as well as the Rio Tinto Wildcats Academy who will also relocate from Bendat Basketball Centre in Floreat to make use of the brand new facilities upon completion.
The WA basketball community will also benefit from use of the courts, which will allow an additional 800 kids to play at Warwick Stadium.
The redevelopment, which will cost $26 million, will also include upgrades to existing facilities at Warwick Stadium, including changerooms, public toilets, community space, lifts and stairs.
“We’re really excited about the WA Labor Government’s support which will go a long way to helping secure our dream of a brand new headquarters and training facility,” Wildcats owner Mark Arena said.
“It’s not only going to be a massive benefit for the Wildcats, but also for our Rio Tinto Academy, to have our training courts, office, gym and recovery facilities all under the same roof.
“We want to be the best in the NBL and set a standard for global basketball so having the ability to practice, do gym sessions and recover at the same venue is going to be a major boost for our program.
“We’re delighted to call Warwick Stadium our home and take what’s already a thriving basketball community to the next level.
“We think that Warwick Stadium is a fantastic location to begin the next chapter of our proud history and are looking forward to building our already strong relationship with Warwick Senators.”
The Wildcats and Warwick Stadium will seek additional funding support from third parties, including the City of Joondalup, to complete the project.
