Paris 2024: Kiwis in action throughout first official day of competition

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has already delivered sporting drama and excitement with the All Blacks Sevens knocked out of medal contention in the men's rugby sevens, plus footballing theatre with the Oly Whites and Football Ferns.
Saturday's opening ceremony (NZT) signals the beginning for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and there are plenty of Kiwis in action on Day 1 across rowing, equestrian, swimming, surfing, field hockey, road cycling and more.

RESULTS
RowingTom Mackintosh finished first in his men’s single scull heat to progress through to the quarter-finals. Emma Twigg finished first comfortably in the women’s single scull heat to reach the quarter-finals. In the men's double scull heat, Robbie Manson and Jordan Parry finished second to qualify for semi-finals, and the women’s double scull heats saw Lucy Spoors and Brooke Francis finish first to reach their semi-final.
EquestrianIn the dressage, Clarke Johnstone, Jonelle Price & Tim Price finished fourth in the team event after the first day of competition. As for the individual event, Johnstone was ninth, while Tim and Jonelle Price were 12th and 27th respectively.
SwimmingErika Fairweather placed fourth in the women's 400m freestyle final, dubbed the 'Race of the Century' with a time of 4:01:12, behind USA swimming legend Katie Ledecky for bronze (4:00:86), young Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh for silver (3:58:37), and Australia's Ariarne Titmus won gold (3:57:49).
"It's a tough field, but someone's got to get fourth," Fairweather told Sky Sport following her final.
"It wasn't my greatest performance tonight. That is sport, we move on.
"I've got a big programme, starting tomorrow, so we'll keep building," she said with the emotion of the race hitting.
"I might be crying right now, but that does not mean I'm not proud of myself. Getting to the Olympics is a massive achievement in itself.
"To be a finalist again and to be fourth in the world, I really shouldn't be complaining."
Eve Thomas finished eighth in her heat of the women’s 400m freestyle, and Hazel Ouwehand fifth in a women’s 100m butterfly heat.
TennisWeather played a major factor in Day 1 of the tennis tournament with Routliffe and Sun's doubles match delayed to Sunday. Sun has since been added to the women's singles draw but that match was also delayed.
Road CyclingKim Cadzow finished seventh in women’s time trial, while Laurence Pithie was 24th in the men’s time trial.
Rugby SevensThe All Blacks Sevens defeated Argentina 17-12 Argentina to progress through to the fifth place playoff against Ireland, winning 17-7 to secure 5th in the men's sevens tournament. With the ambitions of going won better than Tokyo 2020 to move up from silver to gold, their placement at Paris 2024 will give them plenty to build on for Los Angeles 2028.
Hosts France, led by the electric Antoine Dupont, defeated Tokyo 2020 gold medalists Fiji 28-7 in the gold medal match. South Africa won 26-19 over Australia in the bronze medal match.
Canoe - SlalomLuuka Jones 19th in run one (102.90) and 15th in run two (97.13) of the women's K1 heats, penalties proving costly, but the Tauranga paddler has qualified for the semi-finals.
HockeyMen's pool play: Black Sticks men lost 3-2 to India.
FootballMen's group stage: United States 4 (Djordje Mihailovic pen 7’, Walter Zimmerman 12’, Gianluca Busio 30’ Paxten Aaronson 58’) Oly Whites 1 (Jesse Randall 78’). Half-time: 3-0
SurfingBilly Stairmand finished third in his heat on 5.53 points, scoring 3.33 on the first wave and 2.20 on the second, good enough to qualify for the elimination round.
Saffi Vette finished second in her heat to advance through to the second round of the women's competition.
