New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced a revised timeline for its proposed NZ20 domestic competition, with the inaugural men’s and women’s tournaments now slated for the 2027-28 summer.
While progress with investors has been productive, NZC and the NZ20 establishment team have made the joint decision that more time is needed to finalise the league’s structure.
A primary factor in the delay is a crowded international calendar; locked-in Test series against Australia and Sri Lanka in early 2027 have significantly limited the available window for a January launch to just two weeks. Sport Nation understands NZC's cause is helped by the Future Tours Programme for the 2028-31 cycle having yet to be released, meaning the calendar is freed up for NZ20's scheduling.
NZC Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon expressed her support for the move, emphasising long-term stability.
"Our focus is on ensuring the future of domestic T20 cricket in New Zealand is sustainable, competitive and aligned with the global game," Puketapu-Lyndon said.

"Taking additional time now will help ensure the competition is set up to succeed over the long term."
In the interim, the existing Super Smash will continue through the 2026-27 season alongside tours from the Sri Lanka men’s team and the Bangladesh women’s side.
It’s understood the delay also allows a thorough and independent tender process to determine the league investor, as well as the franchise owners - without the pressure on immediate cashflow leverage - and where the teams will be based.
The delay also means the inaugural season will have a men’s and women’s competition run in the same summer.
Don Mackinnon, Chair of the NZ20 Establishment Committee, noted that investor interest remains high despite the delay.
"We have made strong progress in partnership with NZC, with growing interest from investors both in New Zealand and internationally," Mackinnon said.
"However, we are determined to ensure NZ20 launches without compromise and is set up for long-term success from day one."
