Alexander: Ashes has exposed deeper issues with England rugby league
SEN’s Greg Alexander has slammed England for their below standard performances across the three-match Ashes series.
The much hyped series between Australia and England was the first of its kind in 22 years but failed to live up to expectations as the Kangaroos were rarely troubled in all three games.
England didn’t register double digits in any game and a combined aggregate of 70-18 has led Alexander to declare a crisis in English rugby league.
“They had nothing,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“There was a 15-minute period in the third match where they had all of the ball and a couple of line drop outs.
“So much territory and possession but they couldn’t score a try.
“They have no one that can break Australia’s defence open.
“How many players in that England side would get a run in the NRL? None of them!
“There is nothing coming through England. No one is developing or playing the game of rugby league underneath. They are in awful trouble.
“The whole of English rugby league needs to pull up their socks.
“I’ll back it up with numbers for you,” SEN’s Andrew Voss added.
“In the last five games against Australia, England have scored just 22 points in total.
“In the last 240 minutes of football they have played, they have scored two tries.
“A (75th minute) dive from dummy half and a long range 60-metre try to George Williams. That’s it.
“They have to fix their style.”
Australia were equally as unimpressive as the Kangaroos failed to register a completion percentage of over 70% in all three matches.

Despite the series whitewash, Alexander said the series never reached any great heights.
“The Kiwis side were the standout team of this International window,” Alexander said.
“The Ashes wasn’t a good Test series.
“It was all just very underwhelming.”
Cameron Munster was named player of the Ashes series as Australia extended their unbeaten run against England to 16 matches.
