Sydney Kings coach Brian Goorjian is officially Australia’s most winningest coach.
After the Kings beat the Adelaide 36ers on Sunday, Goorjian’s total wins ticked over to 587 from 860 NBL games coached, surpassing legendary NRL coach Wayne Bennett, who has 586 wins from 962 games.
Goorjian began his NRL coaching journey in 1988 with the Eastside Spectres, he’s coached six different NBL clubs overall where he’s been named a six-time NBL Coach of the Year and six-time NBL champion.
With such a record under his belt now, SEN’s Dwayne Russell thinks the 72-year-old is firmly on the Mount Rushmore of Aussie coaches across all sports.
“Brian Goorjian coached his 587th win on the weekend, so he is the greatest Australian coach of any sport by wins coached,” Russell said on SEN Afternoons.
“He now has 587 wins from 860 NBL games, Brian Goorjian, going past rugby league’s Wayne Bennett, with 586 wins from 962.
“So, who's Australia’s greatest ever coach? What is the Mount Rushmore of great coaches in this country? Because Brian Goorjian would be on it for Australia.”
Goorjian also coached the Australian Boomers national team from 2001 to 2008, as well as 2020 to 2024.
