Can the Kings claim the NBL crown?
NBL expert commentator Damon Lowery believes that the Sydney Kings have a chance of winning their first title in 2023.
After a slow start to the season, which saw them sit 3-5, the Kings managed to win six of their last eight games, seeing them well within finals contention.
Sitting in 4th spot and having won against other contenders in Melbourne United, Adelaide 36ers and the Perth Wildcats, the 2001 NBL champion thinks that if they can keep performing, they are well and truly in the hunt for the championship.
“I can make the case that they can win (the championship),” Lowery said on SEN Breakfast.
“Now Brian Goorjian is a fighter, he’s an old lion, and he loves it when the chips are down.
“When it’s war mode, Brian gets real fired up, and this team went and beat Perth in Perth and then comeback and beat Melbourne United.
“They have the best defensive perimeter guys you could imagine. Bul Kuol is a human sleeper hold. He takes people out of the game.
“The only thing with the Sydney Kings is sometimes in the big man department, Tim Soares, their centre, he can go a little missing, and then they are compromised.
“But I’ve seen the best of the Kings, and the best of the Kings can beat anybody.
“They’ve already beaten Adelaide; they’ve beaten Melbourne United, and they beat Perth.
“So, if they are playing their best basketball, they are a championship winner.”
The Kings are off to the nation’s capital to take on the Adelaide 36ers on Wednesday at AIS Arena to extend their winning streak to three games.
Tip-off takes place at 7:30pm AEDT.
