The NBA world has been rocked by news that a head coach and a key player have been arrested and charged by the FBI.
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups are implicated in an alleged sports gambling probe, and a rigged poker investigation undertaken by the FBI which reportedly involves major mafia families.
The Bonanno, Genovese, Lucchese and Gambino families are believed to be at the centre of the sting.
It is alleged that 'Scary Terry' Rozier, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets, tipped off mobsters that he would be injured in an NBA game in 2023, leading to a $200,000 USD prop manipulation bet to take the unders on his stats.
FBI documents suggest that Rozier and fellow defendants brazenly counted their winnings at his house.
Billups was arrested by the FBI after he took part in a rigged poker game which was backed by the New York City organised crime families. Former NBA player Damon Jones was also involved.
Both Rozier and Billups have been placed on leave.
“We are in the process of reviewing the federal indictments announced today,” read the NBA statement.
“Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups are being placed on immediate leave from their teams, and we will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities.
“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority.”
More than 30 people were arrested overall by the FBI
“This is an illegal gambling operation and sports-rigging operation that spans the course of years,” said FBI director Kash Patel.
