New Zealanders are invited to meet the horses and people behind thoroughbred racing as National Thoroughbred Week returns this November, with opportunities to attend free events across the country.
Running from 20–30 November, the initiative opens the gates to studs, racing stables and equine facilities, giving visitors a closer look at the care, expertise and daily routines that support thoroughbreds throughout their lives.
Held alongside National Thoroughbred Week in Australia, the programme connects the public with the thoroughbred’s journey, from breeding and racing through to life beyond the track.
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Head of Thoroughbred Welfare Catlyn Calder said the week offered an opportunity to meet horses up close, ask questions and hear directly from the people who care for them.
“National Thoroughbred Week is about opening our doors and giving people the opportunity to see and understand the care that goes into raising, training and supporting thoroughbreds,” Calder said.
“There is so much that happens beyond what people see on raceday. Visiting a stud, stable or equine facility brings that to life and introduces people to the knowledge, dedication and relationships behind the daily care of these horses.”

The New Zealand programme includes events across Auckland, Waikato, the Central Districts and the South Island, reflecting the industry’s strong connections with communities throughout the country.
Calder said the programme would appeal to families, horse lovers, racing fans and anyone curious about the industry. Whether you’re interested in visiting an Equine Hospital or one of our world-famous horse studs, there’s something for everyone.
“You don’t need to know anything about racing to take part. This is a chance to meet a thoroughbred, discover something new and spend time with people who are passionate about horses.
“It is also an opportunity to learn about the thoroughbred’s versatility and the different pathways available beyond racing. Understanding their care and needs at every stage of life is an important part of the conversation.”
Returning for its second year, National Thoroughbred Week builds on the public invitation first launched in 2025, creating opportunities for greater understanding and stronger connections between the industry and the wider community.
“We’re grateful to the hosts who are making time to welcome visitors and share their work,” Calder said.
“We encourage people across the industry to invite friends and whānau along, particularly those who haven’t had the opportunity to spend time around thoroughbreds before.”
National Thoroughbred Week events are free to attend, with online registration required. To explore the New Zealand programme and book, visit thoroughbredweek.co.nz.
