Matt Reid’s Wednesday night best bets at Launceston (05/03)
Matt Reid • March 5th, 2025 1:28 pm

The first meeting following the conclusion of the Summer Racing Festival is in Launceston on Wednesday night with a nine-race card.
Autumn has begun, but the weather remains warm, and the rail moves to +7m after being in the +3m for Cup Day.
Best bet
Race 9 – 3. Rubick’s Affair
The lightly raced Rubick’s Affair returns to racing after two good trials, both run in quick time relative to the day. After a lean summer, trainer Adam Trinder had a Cup Day double last Wednesday, signalling that his team have returned to form. Rubick’s Affair has a good draw for visiting jockey Liam Riordan and I think he looks placed to run a forward race first-up.
Next best
Race 3 – 1. Hurricane Ketut
Having won 1/23, Hurricane Ketut certainly doesn’t win out of turn, but ran a good race at his first Tassie start on Hobart Cup Day when finishing third. That form line looks the main one for this race, as second there was the favourite Hububbajahn, who Hurricane Ketut meets 3kg better. I think they’re the clear two top picks for the race, and it’s easy to side with the toppy given the price discrepancy of that pair.
Best value
Race 5 – 6. Within Sight
Within Sight returns to Launceston, which has produced both of her career victories, and perhaps importantly, has David Pires going back aboard who was on for both her wins. She was out the back and never a winning hope in Hobart, hitting the line well enough to suggest she’ll be competitive in a race where more intent is shown. That race arrives here, and she’s worth an each-way play at double figures.
