“Manhunt”: Starc’s inside story on Cummins’ stolen baggy green

Australian Test cricketers have a deep love for their baggy green caps.
Most treasure the same cap that they were handed on debut and wear it through the entirety of their careers, with the wear and tear on a well-worn cap considered a badge of honour and testament to how many times they’ve represented their nation.
For some though, the tattered caps get too much, and they opt for a new version, which is what skipper Pat Cummins did before the first Test match against the West Indies in Barbados.
While Cummins swapped into a new baggy green for the pre-series photo shoot, he’s worn his old one throughout the series so far, but that’s not by choice. Instead, his new cap was stolen from the changerooms at Kensington Oval.
Baggy greens were previously made by Albion, but since 2016, Kookaburra has been making the caps for the Aussie side. According to reports, Cummins’ replacement was one of if not the last of the Albion versions.
Given that the remaining new Albion designs may now be extinct, Mitchell Starc says that Cummins and the Aussie team engaged in somewhat of a manhunt during their stint in Barbados in pursuit of the rare cap.
Unfortunately for the skipper, it’s now long gone.
Starc spoke on the incident ahead of his 100th Test as Aussie players are offered a baggy green replacement once they hit the ton, something that he’s not sure he’d be able to take up even if he wanted to.
“Apparently these days if you play 100 Tests you get another baggy green, but I think Pat’s probably taken them all if the last couple of weeks are to go by,” Starc said on Willow Talk Cricket Podcast.
“He didn’t lose (his new one), it got taken, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say that or not, but it got taken.
“So, he now has three like David Warner…
“There was a manhunt for this hat for the whole Barbados Test match. It’s gone, you heard it here first.”
Cummins’ stolen baggy green comes just a year after David Warner’s cap went missing before his final Test in Sydney in 2024. Luckily for the former opener, that cap was found before he wore it in his farewell match.
Australia are 2-0 up in three Test series. The third Test starts at 4:30 am (AEST) on Sunday in Jamaica. Listen to every ball on SEN and the SEN app.
