“I didn’t sleep for a week”: Behind the Storm Boy deal with Coolmore

Clarke Bloodstock’s Jim Clarke has reflected on his pride in selling Storm Boy to Coolmore as Magic Millions week kicks off in Queensland.
Purchased by Clarke in the 2023 Magic Millions sale for $460,000, the colt kicked off it’s career with four wins on the trot including the 2YO Classic during the 2024 Magic Millions.
He was favourite for a Golden Slipper when Clarke brokered a deal with Coolmore to sell the budding star with Coolmore ultimately outbidding a lucrative Yulong deal in the process.
Clarke reflected on his pride for being entrusted with such a deal at his age.
“I did the deal for Storm Boy… that was an amazing opportunity to get to do that deal relatively early in my career. It was the first stallion deal I’ d done on my own,” he told Gareth Hall on Giddy Up.
“I didn’t sleep for a week thinking about how we were going to make it work and fortunately we were able to do a very good deal with Coolmore.
“I really hoped he won the Slipper but I still think he’s an incredible horse and he’s got a fantastic CV to go on and be an very good stallion.
“He covered a huge book of mares in his first season and he’s a horse that’s going to get big opportunities.”
Storm Boy will stand for a fee of $16,500 going forward and will no doubt have a large say in Magic Millions sales for years to come.
