Kane Williamson returns for final Blackcaps series of 2023

After being rested for the one-day international series against Bangladesh, regular Blackcaps white-ball skipper Kane Williamson has been named into the T20I side for the final series of 2023.
The three-match series against Bangladesh is set to begin on December 27 at Napier's McLean Park, before heading to Williamson's home ground, Tauranga's Bay Oval, for the remaining two matches on December 29 and 31.
While Williamson returns from rest, the load management of regular T20 opener Devon Conway will continue for the upcoming series. Michael Bracewell (Achilles), Lockie Ferguson (Achilles), Matt Henry (hamstring) and Henry Shipley (back) were also not considered for selection due to their current injuries.
After being called into the ODI squad as cover for Kyle Jamieson, who had been experiencing stiffness in his left hamstring earlier in the week, Wellington Firebirds' Ben Sears will stay with the squad for the T20I series - providing the medium-fast bowler a chance to play represent his country at home, all his previous international caps have come from overseas tours.
With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup taking place in the West Indies and USA next year, the Blackcaps have opted for more fixtures featuring the limited-over format instead of the 50-over game. New Zealand will only play three ODIs during their home summer, but will play eleven T20Is against Bangladesh, Pakistan and Australia.
“It’s great to be able to finish off a busy year that started on the road by having the group together in New Zealand,” Stead said in a NZC statement.
“We’ve played T20 cricket in a wide variety of conditions this year and it’s been great to see a broad range of players making contributions.
“Tim Seifert, as an example, returned to the side in a specific role at the top of the order and made significant contributions in each series he was part of.”
“With a World Cup in the middle of next year we‘re well into our planning in terms of both the tournament and the type of squad we might need in the conditions.
“While we’re advanced in our planning, as we saw with the One Day World Cup Squad this year with the likes of Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra - there is certainly still time for players to come into that mix.”
