John Bracewell: The 'black box' secret behind Williamson's success

The tributes have continued to flow thick, fast and freely since Kane Williamson dropped a bombshell on the cricketing world late last Friday night with confirmation of his immediate retirement mid-series against England.
Williamson's eye-popping numbers across all formats have sealed a place as one of the sport's immortals - a career arguably greater than any Kiwi to ever don the pads.
One of Williamson's cohorts in New Zealand cricket's pantheon is former Test captain and coach turned Sport Nation commentator John Bracewell.
The former spinner's family ties with the Williamsons have meant he's had a keen eye on Kane's development since the outset, when the differentiating factor in his exceptional ability became apparent - his intellect and capacity to evolve.
"He is what I call a 'black box thinker'," Bracewell told Sport Nation Afternoons.
"Every time he has a plane crash, he goes to the black box and works out exactly the errors that he's made and then goes and fixes it. He does not repeat mistakes. He's constantly learning and developing his game.

"A lot of players will go out there, especially in the modern era, they'll go out and they'll play the same way all the time. Sometimes they get lucky because the odds at a T20 tournament is that the highest paid players win two out of every six games. So, if you're really talented you know the odds in your favour and you don't necessarily have to learn or evolve.
"But Kane actually evolved in every situation, adapted in every situation. As he left the field, he was taking his pads off and he was looking at his black box and going, 'what do I have to adjust for the next innings on this surface? What happens? What's going to happen? And how am I going to be successful?'
"His ability and his intellect to be able to learn surpassed anybody that I've ever met on a cricket field."
Across all three forms, Williamson is the country's all-time leading run-scorer, leading century-maker, most successful modern captain, and the man who delivered the Blackcaps their first world title, with the World Test Championship triumph of 2021.
And while many are wondering how Rob Walter and the Blackcaps will fill the gargantuan void left by his retirement, Bracewell says the foundation Williamson laid means the groundwork is already set for the next generation.
"It's just been a fantastic era in New Zealand cricket and I think he's left it in a far healthier place.
"Don't look at the hole, have a look at how fast it fills because of what he's done."
