Ex-Roosters’ premiership hero’s grand final dream shattered
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is no stranger to time on the sideline, but his latest could strip the prop of a fairytale career ending.
Waerea-Hargreaves has been handed a three-match suspension in the English Super League for a high tackle that is set to rule him out of Hull KR’s Grand Final.
It is Waerea-Hargreaves’ first season in England and the grand final loomed as a fitting send-off for one of rugby league’s toughest enforcers.
The Roosters’ prop spent a total of 27 weeks on the sideline throughout his 16-year career with his frequent suspensions becoming a trademark of a career defined by brutality.
Hull KR coach Willie Peters has confirmed his club would fight the charge, leaving the prop with a glimmer of hope he could still line up in the grand final.
“I can’t really comment on the tackle because we’re going to fight it, but we want Jared to bow out a winner, because that’s exactly what he is,” Peters told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“You can’t really put a value on what Jared has given us – there’s the big-game experience, but it’s also what he does off the field, including the intensity he brings and standards he sets at training.
“We have a chance to win a third trophy, and we’d love him to be there this weekend because he’s been a huge part of it.”
Waerea-Hargreaves confirmed in April he would retire at season’s end, leaving this as his final opportunity.
The forward began his career at the Manly Sea Eagles in 2009, before joining the Roosters in 2010.
He would ultimately end his career with three NRL premierships, in 2013, 2017, and 2018, before making the move to Hull KR.
He represented the Roosters in 310 appearances, holding the club record for most games, and played 33 times for New Zealand. He also won three World Club Challenge titles.
