Josh Inglis’ heroics with the bat has led Australia to a miraculous victory over arch rivals England overnight in the Champions Trophy.
England set the score of 8/351 after their 50 overs were completed, with Ben Duckett getting most of the work done after notching up an impressive 165 runs off 143 balls.
The Aussie’s had their work cut out for them early, falling to 2/27 after stars Steve Smith (5) and Travis Head (6) departed cheaply within the first five overs.
A steady partnership between Matt Short and Marnus Labuschagne got Australia back into the contest, until Labuschagne was dismissed three runs shy of achieving a half century.
Three overs later, the impressive 63 run innings from Short came to an end which saw Australia in a lot of trouble, still needing 216 runs from 166 balls left and with six wickets in hand.
Both of Australia’s wicket keepers formed a strong 146 run partnership to propel the Aussie’s into a winning position, with Alex Carey’s departure in the 42nd over capping off a courageous 69 runs off 63 ball innings.
At this stage, with Inglis still at the crease, Australia needed 70 runs off 50 balls with now only four wickets in hand.
However, with the help of a solid 32 run cameo from Glenn Maxwell, Australia were able to find a way to win with nine balls to spare, in what has now become the second-highest successful run chase in Australia’s ODI history.
Inglis’ heroics also helped ensure that he’d become the fifth Australian to score a century in all three formats, as well as be apart of the highest ODI run chase achieved by any nation in ICC tournaments.
Australia’s next game of the Champions Trophy will be against South Africa on Tuesday night, where they’ll look to solidify their spot on the top of their group and strengthen their chances of advancing to a semi-final.
