“Get fresh air, get the money”: Jockey’s big push for mare

Based on what jockey Ben Melham had to say, emerging mare On Display is a genuine threat at Flemington this weekend.
The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained four-year-old had zero luck in the Group 2 Let’s Elope (1400m) at headquarters last start when she was caught behind leader Bossy Benita and Miss Aria before her run was completely impeded.
On Display finished 10th of 13 behind Lazzura on the back of her stunning first-up win at Caulfield on August 30, but likely would have finished much closer to the winner if she was afforded any fortune whatsoever.
After completing track work on Tuesday morning in preparation for the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) on Saturday, Melham was quite confident according to the mare’s breeder and owner Sheamus Mills.
“I’m really looking forward to her (On Display) getting back there (to Flemington),” Mills said on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“I just watched the video of this morning’s track work and Ben Melham’s comment was: ‘Get fresh air, get the money’. It was something along those lines.
“So I’m hoping he gets the first part right and then hopefully the second part follows.”
Gareth Hall pointed out that On Display drew barrier 1 for her last assignment, indicating anything else will probably be a luxury this weekend.
“Just hope you don’t draw barrier 1. Unfortunately for jockeys they can’t climb over the top of them,” Hall said.
“She was unlucky. It would have been interesting if she did get out there against Lazzura in the concluding stages.”
On Display is currently rated a $6 chance with Sportsbet for Saturday’s Rose Of Kingston at Flemington.
Another of Price and Kent’s gun mares, also owned and bred by Mills, is Charm Stone who won the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at The Valley last Friday night.
Mills says there is some interest regarding one of the last few slots in The Everest (1200m), but a lot will depend on the Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this Saturday.
“There’s a little bit of interest there, but a fair bit of water to go under the bridge,” Mills said of the $20 Everest.
“There’s obviously the Premiere Stakes there in Sydney on Saturday and there’s probably a couple of eyes on a couple there.
“Nobody has to jump in to anything just yet. There’s a couple of slots left and they can be watching the same horses and work something out next week.”
Godolphin, Coolmore and Mulberry Racing still have a slot to fill each for this year’s Everest which takes place at Randwick on October 18.
