“Best 50-1 shot”: Berry’s massive Slipper call
Three-time Golden Slipper winner Tommy Berry reckons Incognito is probably the “best 50-1 shot” he’s ever ridden.
Having sat on the son of his most recent Slipper winner Stay Inside from debut, the gun jockey is well-placed to make such a call.
Berry has remained loyal to the Michael Freedman camp ahead of this year’s $5 million juvenile feature with all the planning set to come to fruition this Saturday at Rosehill.
He concedes it is a very competitive edition of the Slipper.
“Very open, it’s been changing every week,” Berry said on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“We haven’t seen too many two-year-olds that have been able to win by margins or have been dominant or have put a few wins or even good runs together.
“I think the Melbourne form has been the most consistent so far. It’s an open race.”

Given it’s such a wide-open affair, and based on recent runs, Berry feels Incognito can improve sharply after finishing fourth in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 7.
“My horse, Incognito, in general I’m very surprised he is over 50-1,” Berry added.
“His sectionals from his last run (in the Todman), they absolutely walked when (winner) Paradoxium led them up, and he, (runner-up) Stretan Ruler and my bloke pretty much ran identical last 600s home.
“He was spotting them a fait bit of ground in the straight and he’s hit the line only beaten a few lengths by them.
“They’re around $10 and he’s 50-1. I guess because he hasn’t won this preparation and people are probably a bit frustrated with losing on him.
“But his work this morning was very sharp so he’s probably the best 50-1 shot I’ve ever ridden.”
The wide draw of barrier 16 and recent winless form explains the price drift to $71 with Sportsbet, but Berry says the former Slipper favourite is primed to run a big race.
“He’s been a little bit frustrating because he’s done the little things wrong,” he said prior to this morning’s barrier draw.
“If you go back through his three runs this time in - he had issues first-up; second-up he was way too far out of his ground and hit the line well at Rosehill; and last start with the blinkers on in a slow-run race he was massive.
“In a Slipper with high pressure, if he draws well, I guarantee he’ll be finishing in the first five. I’m pretty happy with him.”
As for the horse to beat, Berry feels current Slipper favourite Chayan has all the right timing.
“The filly of Annabel (and Rob Archibald)’s that won last week - Chayan,” Berry said further.
“She won by a margin and won well. You talk about timing with two-year-olds, that’s what it’s all about.
“She looks like she’s come on the scene at the right time. She loses nothing with Craig Williams in the saddle either.”
Slipper aside, Berry says he is most looking forward to riding Lady Shenandoah for the first time in race conditions in the George Ryder Stakes.
