Spring racing is fast-approaching and with that comes a look to the future.
SENTrack’s ‘Back to the Futures’ show with Cam Luke and Miles Pfitzner will be diving into some of the upcoming feature races and assessing which horses to follow in the lead-up.
The Caulfield Cup is one of the nation’s premium staying handicaps taking place at Caulfield over 2400m on October 18.
Pfitzner and Luke have power ranked their top six runners for the Melbourne Racing Club’s showpiece event.
Cam Luke's power rankings
6 - Half Yours
“Belted them in the Caloundra Cup. The McEvoys clearly have the Caulfield Cup as their number one target for this particular horse.
“I think he’ll go to the Metropolitan and be incredibly hard to beat. Last year we saw Land Legend and Zardozi run in the Metrop then run well in the Caulfield Cup.”
5 - Golden Snap
“I always look to find a Japanese horse in the early rankings.
“Golden Snap is 99.9% to be coming here.
“Will be similar to Warp Speed last year who ran in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
“I think he’s a 2400-2600m horse at Group 1 level.”
4 - Buckaroo
“A wonderful run last year where you could find an excuse or two behind Duke De Sessa.
“Class gets him a long way in a Melbourne Cup, but I think he’s a lot closer to being a top quality 2400m horse than he is at two miles.
“I expect Buckaroo to be in markets for both Cups. I expect him to run a really good Caulfield Cup.”
3 - Aeliana
“Of the three-year-old fillies she’s the one I’m much more comfortable can run a strong Group 1 mile and a half.
“In saying that, everything Chris Waller has said leads to her not being there.
“But I’m going to have her at 3 because I really like her.”
2 - Middle Earth
“Had him as an early Caulfield Cup futures bet a year ago, he didn’t get to the race.
“He’s taken a year to furnish and acclimatise.
“We now know what the plan will be going into the spring. He might go Turnbull, Might And Power into the Caulfield Cup.”
1 - Sir Delius
“I know Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott continually talk about him being a Melbourne Cup horse and I’m not disagreeing with that.
“But he’s a tough horse, he can roll along in front over the mile and a half and absorb pressure.
“I’m a Sir Delius fan.”
Mile Pfitzner's power rankings
6 - Sir Delius
“The form back at Longchamp, a nice win at Doomben on Heavy 8. Superb.
“I think will be there or thereabouts. Got the Without A Fight type profile.”
5 - Moira
“Chris Waller runner, currently around the $26 mark. Can’t wait to see this horse return.
“One run in Australia so far which was in the Doncaster, but before was a Group 1 winner over 2200m in the Breeders’ Cup in the US.
“This horse deadset loves it over 2000m.”
4 - Birdman
“Love how this horse has returned, trials looked elite.
“Caulfield and Melbourne Cups have always been the target. Another year under his belt.
“Was bought for a reason and this horse will eat it up.”
3 - Treasurethe Moment
“Spanked them in the Vinery Stud, won the Oaks over 2400m, she’s won a Kewney and an Armanasco.
“This horse just didn’t want to lose. They’ve looked after her.
“Shouldn’t bump into Via Sistina as Yulong will send Treasure to the Caulfield Cup and Via to the Cox Plate.”
2 - Middle Earth
“The Australian Cup Prelude win, then the Australian Cup run, the Queen Elizabeth - 6.5 off Via Sistina and Dubai Honour.
“Can settle in a bit more. I really like this horse over 2000m. I think he’s going to be an out and out star.
“He’s a deadset winner. I’d be keen to follow him.”
1 - Light Infantry Man
“The Australian Cup was the race for me where he proved a few were a rung below him.
“He’s now a two-time Group 1 winner. He’s versatile, he can be ridden with cover or without, he can handle anything from a Good 3 through to a Soft 7.
“He’s returned a bull and this horse would be in my top 6 power rankings for the entire spring.
“Competitive form 1400m right through to 2000m. If he goes there then they’re confident he runs the 2400m.”
