McEvoy: Pride Of Jenni is the horse to beat in the Hollindale, not Half Yours
Half Yours returns second-up in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes across 1800m at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
While the 2025 Melbourne Cup/Caulfield Cup winner is the second favourite in the market at $3.50 with Sportsbet behind Birdman, the gelding’s co-trainer Calvin McEvoy is worried about one particular mare in the $500,000 race.
That mare is Pride Of Jenni.
On SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up, McEvoy was asked whether he is happy with Pride Of Jenni running in the Hollandale. Tony McEvoy’s co-trainer admitted that he isn’t too fond of the eight-year-old rivalling his five-year-old in the Group 2.
“I’m not particularly happy,” McEvoy admitted.
“Only because she's a very good horse and when she turns up and puts in a terrific performance, which she no doubt probably will, she's very hard to beat.
“I think that Gold Coast is a track that will really suit her much more so than what will suit our horse.
“Unfortunately, we've drawn a little bit wide (9). I'd say she's going to be a fair way ahead of Half Yours, and it'll take his best efforts to chase her down.
“But look, it's a horse race, it'll make it a good spectacle.”
In fact, McEvoy has even hailed the daughter of the Pride Of Dubai as the hardest horse to beat in the race.
“I think Pride Of Jenni (is the hardest to beat), for sure,” the co-trainer stated.
“Her best and her worst, there's a big gap, but her best is very hard to beat.”
In even worse news for Half Yours, Calvin explained why the Gold Coast track doesn’t suit the son of St Jean.
“Even before Pride Of Jenni was spoken about or thought of for this race was, the query was always the track (for Half Yours),” revealed McEvoy.
“If anyone's had a chance to walk the Gold Coast track, it's a fairly tight turning track, and it suits on-pacers, and you sort of need to draw well, which he hasn't.”
As Pride Of Jenni aggressively leads in each race, setting a blistering pace, the co-trainer also stated that they won’t “fry” Half Yours in the run, prioritising the gelding’s other two races ahead of him in his Queensland preparation.
“We're not going to fry ourselves over the other horses in the race,” McEvoy admitted.
“We're going to be worrying about our horse and Jamie (Melham) giving him a good ride and I'm giving him every chance.
“This is his second-up run. He goes to the Doomben Cup, then the Q22 after it.
“So, there's bigger fish to fry than this weekend anyway.”
The Hollindale Stakes jumps at 4:08pm AEST, and Pride Of Jenni is the $3.80 to win that race.
