"No idea": How Newitt formulated record breaking win

Craig Newitt made history on Saturday, winning his fourth Group 1 Newmarket Handicap – the most Newmarket wins by any jockey in history.
The hoop previously won on Miss Andretti (2007), Shamexpress (2013), The Quarterback (2016), and now Caballus.
When reflecting on the history making ride, Newitt admitted that he had no idea how he was going to ride the gelding until 20 minutes before the race.
“Going into the Newmarket, I had no idea how I was going to ride that horse until probably 20 minutes before the race,” Newitt told RSN’s Correct Weight.
“I sort of came up with a plan that I told the connections in the mounting yard.
“It wasn't like he was a horse that was going to need cover and follow the field.
“We were able to make our own decision where we wanted to go, and we rolled the dice, stayed in, and everyone followed. So, obviously that helped with the favourite (Tentyris) having roadblocks throughout the run.
“But I think my horse did it at both ends and was very good on the day.”
Despite Caballus being rated an outside chance according to the odds, closing at $20 with Sportsbet, the multiple-time Group 1 winning hoop was actually very confident the son of I Am Invincible would at least place in the $2 million handicap.
“He arguably had the best form going into the race through Joliestar at weight-for-age,” Newitt stated.
“I actually went there very confident that (Caballus) would run top 3. I really went there confident (he’d) run top 3. I was quite bullish about (his) chances.”
Newitt now has 34 Group 1 victories following Saturday's victory.
