“Best horse in the country”: Will 2000m be Autumn Glow’s best trip?
Autumn Glow did it again on Saturday, remaining undefeated in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.
The four-year-old mare moves to 11 wins from 11 starts and has now accumulated over $8 million in prize money.
The Chris Waller-trained bay jumped as the $1.28 favourite with Sportsbet and won like a $1.28 favourite should.
The daughter of The Autumn Sun settled midfield before hitting the lead with 250m to go, then embarrassed her competition, winning by 2.79 lengths.
In fact, the jockey aboard her, James McDonald even puller her up with 50m to go, celebrating the race before it had even concluded.
The furthest distance the mare has ever run before is 1600m, and on SENTrack’s Saturday Trackside, Cam Luke and Matt Nevett agreed that 2000m could be her best distance moving forward, off the back of her freakish victory in the George Ryder.
Nevett: “What a horse, what a mare!”
Luke: “She’s the best horse in the country!”
Nevett: “I don’t think 2000m would be a worry for her, if she can do that off a fast (tempo). They were going (quick) early.”
Taggart: “She settles so well.
“What (James McDonald) does is he gets a roll on the first 100-150m, finds a position and as soon as he drops his hands on her and gets her to relax, she just spits the bit out and goes to sleep.”
Luke: “I’m with you Matty, I reckon 2000m is her distance.
“I desperately want to see it.”
Looking at some notable Group 1s across 2000m that Autumn Glow is in the market for, she is the $1.80 favourite to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 11 and the $3 favourite to win the Cox Plate (2040m) on Ocotber 24.
