Wootton Bassett was a giant of world racing. A generational stallion!
We lost him yesterday to pneumonia and he fought to the very end.
Our thoughts are with everyone at Coolmore.
His story was extraordinary, it gives us all hope.
He went from a £46,000 yearling to a $100 million dollar stallion.
He was a fast racehorse - unbeaten as a two-year-old - before it all went wrong at three.
He would retire to stud in France and stand for €5,000.
He was a hard sell to start with, but from just 23 foals from his first crop he produced his first champion in Almanzor.
He would make the most of his opportunities from then on and his reputation grew each season.
Until the famous Coolmore operation took a punt and purchased him in a multimillion-dollar deal.
He had only been at Coolmore since 2020 and despite being 17 it felt like this was just the beginning.
He was breaking records for fun - his first two crops in Ireland he produced 25 Stakes winners.
He could do it all as a sire! Aidan O’Brien summed it up best like only he can, he was a freak that produced fast horses that could stay.
Wootton Bassett leaves this world as the hottest stallion in world racing.
He’s currently the leading stallion in Europe and you have the feeling his progeny is about to explode in this part of the world.
He stood for €300,000 in Ireland $385,000 here in Australia. That fee is the highest stallion fee in Australian history.
Wootton Bassett was the horse of dreams, he proved that anything is possible. His story was one of hope, resilience and pure greatness.
We were so lucky to have him here in our country and like the rest of the world we will see his legacy shine bright through his bloodlines for years to come.
From humble beginnings, Wootton Bassett leaves us as a legend of the most beautiful game.
