Why Wodeton didn't protest San Domenico loss
Wodeton came second in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m), but some punters were upset that no protest was called against the winner Raging Force.
Raging Force, ridden by Tommy Berry, shifted in front of Wodeton in the final stretch of the race, causing the colt to check.
This incident nearly ended horribly for jockey James McDonald who was riding Wodeton, but luckily all injuries were avoided.
When asked why McDonald didn’t protest Wodeton’s loss against Raging Force, David Taggart broke down exactly why the protest didn’t happen.
“Why didn’t J-Mac protest on Wodeton? Because it was never beating the winner,” Taggart revealed on SENTrack’s Sunday Trackside.
“He said it straight away… Mate, you weren’t gonna win.
“I reckon it gets within half to a neck of Raging Force, but it wouldn’t have won, it was too close to home.”
However, Dean Watling had a differing opinion on SENTrack’s Lay Back with Betfair, believing that a protest should’ve been made.
“I thought that was weird (there was no protest),” Watling admitted.
“The stewards had a meeting and discussed if they were going to protest themselves on it, on behalf of them.
“They then sort of did a protest without sort of doing a protest, which suggested the result wouldn’t have been overturned.
“We sort of had the outcome without really having a protest, but I found that strange.
“I think you can definitely make a case that horse wins, back up that inside.
While no protest was held, Tommy Berry has been suspended for six meetings due to the incident.
Berry will resume riding on September 20.
