“Car crash”: Why the Toorak was full of forgive runs
Transatlantic took out the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), giving trainer Tony Gollan back-to-back wins in the race.
However, the story has been all about the other luckless runners.
The 10-horse field had an early race scramble, which Transatlantic was able to avoid thanks to leading.
However, the rest of the field wasn’t so lucky.
From the favourite Sepals being trotted on to the second favourite Evaporate copping an early bump after slightly missing the start, the Group 1 had plenty of forgive runs.
“There was a heap of interference there, early on in the race between Feroce and Lazzura,” Peter Anthoinsz told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“Sepals was just one of the biggest car crashes of the spring – a complete forgive.”
Form guru David Gately echoed that synopsis and listed six runners from the race who have landed in his forgive file.
“A string of forgive runs out of that race,” Gately agreed.
“Transatlantic did a good job because it’s not as if he dawdled in the lead.
“He’s won the race but here is the forgive file out of it:
Sepals – car crash.
Desert Lightning – wide.
Pinstriped – back, hopelessly held up.
Lazzura – checked.
Damask Rose – poleaxed.
Evaporate – misses the start.
“It was like that episode of the Simpsons where the seven baseball players all had misfortunes leading in.”
SENTrack & RSN’s Gareth Hall chimed in and stated that Transatlantic simply took luck out of the equation.
“At the end of the day, sometimes those horses that have tactical speed, they’re out in front and they’re out of trouble basically,” Hall said.
“They make their own luck.
“Right place, right time, you need to make the most of your opportunities.
“When it is your moment, take your moment and that is what Transatlantic did.”
