"Hopefully": Sepals targeting Golden Eagle
Cliff Brown’s stable star Sepals is making a return this week, after being trotted on in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
The four-year-old gelding started as the favourite in that race, yet finished last in what many described as a “car crash”.
While many pundits believed Sepals' spring was over, Cliff Brown has revealed that the son of Calyx has pulled up well from that race on October 11, and now the trainer is hoping to have him in this weekend’s Group 1 Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick.
“He’s in Sydney, he’s settled in very well,” Brown told RSN’s Correct Weight.
“I didn’t know which way I was going to go with him for a few days after that last race - he certainly wasn’t himself.
“But by the Wednesday (after the race) he really turned the corner.
“We’ll see how he gallops Tuesday morning and hopefully he’ll run in the Golden Eagle.
Ethan Brown will ride him.”
However, despite optimism around running in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner this Saturday, Brown admitted that he won’t know if Sepals has fully recovered from being trotted on until race day.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think you will know how he is really going until race day,” Brown said.
“If we had have had the time to have a jump out, that would’ve been fantastic.
“In the back of your mind you’re thinking is it the right thing to do, isn’t it the right thing to do.
“I’m not sure how many horses come out of those runs and bounce back next time, so there’s plenty of unknowns.
“The only thing I can go on is how the horse is, and I wouldn’t have been shocked a few days after (the Toorak) if I put him in the paddock, but his coat really came on, he came on and he was really bright and well.”
Sepals is currently $15 with Sportsbet to win the Golden Eagle.
