Curse breaker Marhoona primed for huge spring
The 2024 Golden Slipper winner Marhoona has returned with a bang, winning the 1100m Heritage Stakes.
Prior to the race at Rosehill there was a lot of talk around whether Marhoona would fall victim to the 'Golden Slipper Curse'.
The Golden Slipper Curse is one where the two-year-old Slipper winner is cursed with failure in their following seasons.
The Michael Freedman trained bay proved the curse wrong, showing that she is still an elite level filly.
“Marhoona broke the Golden Slipper curse in style,” Mick Gannon told RSN.
“She joins Tempted as another three-year-old filly from the Slipper franking that form.
“She’s very exciting and she may have just put her hand up for an Everest slot.”
David Taggart also loved the fact that the filly wasn’t impacted by the curse.
“She went away from them in the end,” he told SENTrack’s Saturday Trackside.
“The Slipper curse is over.”
Furthermore, he revealed that the three-year-old will only get better, off the back of her first-up victory.
“She didn’t put them away when (Tommy Berry) pushed the trigger,” Taggart explained.
“He balanced her up and just moved up to them.
“As soon as he asked for that effort, she sort of just took 50m to 100m to really find and then went away from them on the line.
“So, she’s only gonna improve off that.
“Wait till she gets up over 1200m, she’s only gonna be better.”
