"Good chance": Maher confident Pride Of Jenni will race on Stakes Day
Fresh of her history making Empire Rose victory, Pride Of Jenni may be racing again in the Melbourne Cup Carnival next weekend on Stakes Day.
On Saturday, the eight-year-old mare became the first horse to win the Group 1 Empire Rose multiple times, putting on a vintage performance.
The fan favourite did what she does best – lead early, put a distance on her competition, then win the race.
In 2023, Pride Of Jenni won two Group 1’s during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, winning the Empire Rose (1600m) and Champions Mile (1600m).
And now she could be looking to replicate that feat, according to trainer Ciaron Maher.
“It’s about the preparation and you would say the preparation has gone extremely smooth,” Maher told RSN’s Correct Weight.
“That was only her third run (this preparation).
“Just looking at her this morning, she seems to have bounced through it very well.
“We’ll see how she goes throughout the week, but I’d say looking at her today she’s a good chance of backing up.
“We’ll enter in both (the Champions Mile and Champions Stakes), you can make a case for either, but I’d say I’ll probably keep her at the mile.”
When reflecting on the fan favourite winning the Empire Rose for the second time, Maher admitted the history making victory was “significant.”
“I was confident that she could win,” Maher said.
“I just liked the race shape and where she was weight wise.
“She was on, even in the mounting yard.
“Dec (Declan Bates) said after he went 100m, he knew the race was over.
“She’s just an amazing horse.
“To turn in a run like that as an eight-year-old on Derby Day, Group 1, it’s pretty significant.”
Pride Of Jenni is $6 with Sportsbet to win the Champions Mile.
