Anthonisz: The "best colt in Victoria" isn't Caulfield Guineas favourite
Vinrock came into the 1600m Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday Night as the hot $1.60 favourite yet failed to finish inside the placings.
While some might look at the result and write the three-year-old off for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), he actually had plenty of excuses.
As the barriers opened Vinrock slightly missed the start as his head bobbed down at an inopportune time. As they jumped he was severely hampered by Highvol which added to his woes.
That combination of misfortune with a wide barrier meant the colt had nowhere to go and was forced to the backend of the field.
Furthermore, the Matt Laurie-trained son of I Am Invincible pulled up lame after the run.
Form analyst Peter Anthonisz exclaimed that the Group 1 winner’s run in the Stutt was completely forgivable, and still believes he is the horse who should take out the three-year-old Caulfield Guineas at $8 (on Sportsbet).
“I think Vinrock is a complete forgive,” Anthonisz told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“I am going to die on that hill, this preparation.
“Look he went down onto his knees straight out of the gates, it was a complete forgive.
Mark (Zahra) was still held up there on Vinrock, looking for a run there on the turn and in the end they just let him brush home.”
Anthonisz stated that Vinrock is the best colt in Victoria and he should be beating Autumn Boy ($3.80 on Sportsbet) and Wodeton ($6) in the mile race.
“He’s clearly the best colt in Victoria that I’ve seen,” admitted Anthonisz.
“He’s just stronger than these (other runners).
“I can’t have him double the price of Autumn Boy and Wodeton going towards the Caulfield Guineas.
“We saw the best of Wodeton on Saturday and it’s not good enough.
“Autumn Boy wasn’t suited off that fast tempo, I’ll give him that.
“Now it’s just a case of how much speed is going to be there in the Caulfield Guineas.”
Even though West Of Swindon defeated Vinrock at Moonee Valley, Anthonisz doubled down that the Sires' Produce winner is still the best priced horse in the race.
“Do you think that Vinrock is better than West Of Swindon?” host Gareth Hall asked.
Anthonisz replied: “Well, just off the starting price profile, he can’t be longer in price.
“As long as the lameness isn’t too much of an issue going forward, I’m sure he will very much be in the thick of things.”
The Caulfield Guineas takes place at Caulfield on October 11.
