Reece Walsh’s decision to post a video of him punching a mate in the face on social media has been described as “grade 3 in stupidity” with the Broncos reportedly furious with their star.
Vision of Walsh wearing a boxing glove flooring his friend was posted to his own TikTok account. The “stunt” was reportedly the result of a lost bet.
“I was just having a laugh with my mate, obviously we don’t support violence and stuff like that but yeah it’s not a good look for myself,” Walsh said afterwards.
“We were all just trying to have a laugh and a good time with friends but obviously we don’t support violence and all those kind of things.
“I feel like I could chose them (his actions) a lot better, I feel like I’m just having a laugh with my mate and obviously putting it on social media I know it’s really important to try and keep those things away and I probably went a bit too far.”
Irrespective of the reasons behind it, the fact it became public has left the club and others aghast.
“He doesn’t regret his actions, those shenanigans in punching a mate in the head,” Andrew Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He doesn’t regret his actions, he regrets that he’s caused a drama. He’d probably do it again. Whether the video is rolling or not he’s gonna do it.
“Could the NRL have a social media policy? What’s funny to some is outrageous to others.”
Walsh, who is currently sidelined with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee, has not played for the Broncos since Round 7 with the club’s season on a slippery slope amid on and off-field dramas.
He was not selected for Queensland’s State of Origin team and is not expected back for the Broncos until at least Round 13.
This incident is the last thing the club needed.
“Grade three in stupidity,” Dave Riccio added on SEN. “The optics are poor and it’s a case of when you’re in a situation like the Broncos are, any move the Broncos make is going to be scrutinised.
“He decided to post it himself, surely you need to be aware of your current environment as far as what attention this will bring to you.”
