“Foundational ground for our next generation”: NSW coach insists Sheffield Shield remains relevant and healthy

NSW Cricket coach Greg Shipperd has defended the current standing of the Sheffield Shield competition, saying it is doing its job in preparing the next generation of Australian cricketers.
The healthiness of the Sheffield Shield has been in question given its low average crowd numbers, however, it has garnered more attention with the selection battle for the vacant opening batting position earlier in the cricket season.
Shipperd insists the competition is functioning exactly as it should.
“Right across the board, in all the states, Sheffield Shield cricket is doing its job, and while we may not enjoy the crowds, there is great interest in performance by the selectors and the general public,” Shipperd said on SEN 1170 Mornings.
“Historically, it’s done its job for well over 100 years and it hasn't been tinkered too much... I think you can see out of this last round the combative and competitive nature of state vs state cricket.
“It’s big in the players’ minds and it's the foundational ground for our next generation, every generation.”
That next generation was on display as NSW enjoyed a big, albeit nail biting, victory over Western Australia, with standout performances from young talent Jack Edwards.
Shipperd applauded his captain’s efforts in the match and rated his chances at representing Australia on a Test level.
“We saw the emergence of a terrific young leader in Jack Edwards who really stood up, put his body on the line and bowled beautifully… a remarkable effort in a game where there were a number of remarkable efforts from our young team,” Shipperd commented.
“He’s… important with the bat, important with the ball, critically important with his slips catching and his leadership… second in the wicket taking in the competition and his batting is coming on nicely.
“His future is obviously bright… and then the Australian selectors will be able to think about the wealth of all-rounders in Australia… it's a healthy position for the Australian cricket team in a generational sense.”
Shipperd will next take control of the Sydney Sixers in the men’s Big Bash competition with their campaign beginning on December 16.
