Championship gap widens as Piastri spins in Sao Paulo Sprint

Oscar Piastri has had yet again another disastrous F1 Sprint run, losing control and crashing into the wall on lap six at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Piastri – entering Sao Paulo after a difficult run of form – was not able to capitalise on the short Sprint format, with teammate and Championship rival Lando Norris claiming victory and the full eight-point return.
"Just dipped a wheel on the white line of the kerb and around I went," Piastri said.
"Silly mistake really, or unfortunate mistake. So that's it."
The crash ruled Piastri out of the race, and now sees him fall nine points behind Norris in the race to the Drivers’ Championship.
Thankfully for Piastri, the Australian was able to recover in time for Qualifying, claiming a fourth-placed start on the grid after a strong lap in Q3.
"Just didn't go any faster, I think that was the biggest thing," Piastri told Sky Sports after qualifying.
"Just very different conditions to what we had yesterday, and just everything felt much trickier today.
"Obviously, a big disappointment with the result, but the car has looked quick this weekend, especially over a longer run."
Working in Piastri’s favour, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was dumped from Qualifying in Q1 for the first time in his stellar F1 career, with the Championship contender to start from 16th on the grid.
McLaren teammate Norris continued his top form, claiming P1 ahead of Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in two and three.
As it stands, Lando Norris leads his McLaren teammate in Piastri by nine points with four races (including Sao Paulo) remaining. If Norris holds on to win from pole, the gap will widen to at least 16 points if the Australian can work his way into second place.
The Sao Paulo Grand Prix is set to jump tomorrow morning at 4:00am AEST.
