For LJ: The touching story behind Alex Johnston’s four-try haul
For everything that has been said and written about Alex Johnston’s four try haul against the Storm, the story behind his celebrations speaks to the character and compassion of the man and the Rabbitohs more than anything.
The South Sydney winger is now up to 206 tries and sits just six behind Ken Irvine’s long-standing record, but the reality of his actions on Saturday night make for a remarkable and touching story.
Logan Daley, a semi-regular SEN Crunch Time caller, joined the Sunday show to share the story behind Johnston and his teammate’s celebrations.
“I rang a few months ago,” Daley said. “My son was crook with leukaemia.
“I wanted to thank the Souths guys. They picked him up on Friday and took him to training. Every single player shook his hand and gave him a hug.
“They said they would do an LJ celebration when they scored a try and they did it.
“Mate, the smile on my young bloke’s face, unbelievable. What a great club and a great bunch of guys.
“It was Alex Johnston, the third and fourth one (try) he threw up an L and a J with his hands.
"It was great. I wanted to say a massive thank you. Especially Jason Clarke. It was unbelievable.”
Asked how LJ, 11, had been doing in his health battle, Daley added: “He’s just finishing his last batch of chemo now so he might be able come home on Thursday.
“He’s been away since September last year. He’s in Sydney Children’s Hospital.
"It was just a great day for him and put a huge smile on his face.”
Souths lost to Storm by two points but the events of the match will stay with Logan, LJ and the Daley family forever.
