Volpato makes bombshell nationality switch on World Cup eve
After years of speculation, Cristian Volpato has switched his nationality, making him available to represent Australia for this year's FIFA World Cup.
Despite being born in Sydney and playing for both Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers' academies, the 22-year-old has represented Italy's U-19 and U-20s sides, having appeared to shun the Socceroos despite several attempts to have him play for the national team.
But in a twist of events, Football Australia has confirmed on Friday that it has lodged paperwork to FIFA for the nationality switch to be formalised and has received a release letter from FIGC (Italian Football Federation).
FA is currently waiting to receive clearance on the switch.
Volpato, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo as an attacking midfielder, will now join the train-on squad that is currently preparing in Los Angeles.
Australia will officially confirm their 26-man squad for the tournament on June 1 (this coming Monday).
