After finishing 11th in Saturday's Sonsio Grand Prix (Sunday NZ time), Kiwi IndyCar driver Marcus Armstrong found himself in the middle of a fiery post-race confrontation with Romain Grosjean at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Grosjean, who finished 21st, stormed straight to Armstrong’s pit box after the race.
Although the reason isn’t fully clear, footage shows an on-track incident where Armstrong went off, another car went wide, and Grosjean likely suffered suspension damage.
Video shows Grosjean telling the crew, “Get off. I was going to talk to him. I was going to say I want to punch you.”
Crew members stepped in as Grosjean finally faced Armstrong.
“I have never punched anyone in my life,” he then said.
“He fancied a bit of a fist fight, actually. A bit of UFC, a bit of MMA - something I’m not accustomed to."
"But hey, I’ve got like a 350-pound fueler right behind me, so fair play to Romain, he’s got some balls for trying to attack me with him behind me.” Armstrong later told Fox.
Scott Dixon led the way for the New Zealand contingent, recovering to finish 6th after a wild Turn 1 tangle with Caio Collet that saw him drop to 24th on the opening lap of the race. Scott McLaughlin came home in 16th.
The IndyCar season continues with the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 (local time).
