Repercussions: Unexpected twist in Piastri-Norris feud
In a major boost to his world title hopes, Australian F1 star Oscar Piastri has been given assurances by the team at McLaren that they will not be giving Lando Norris preferential treatment.
A rift between the drivers looked to have reached breaking point after the race in Singapore where Norris overtook his teammate to knock him off the podium but made contact in the process.
Piastri went public with his displeasure that McLaren had allowed the move with the team opting against overturning their positions on track.
"That's not fair, I'm sorry. That's not fair," Piastri said over his radio.
"If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, then that's a pretty s*** job at avoiding."
It has since led to relentless headlines that the Australian is unhappy with things at McLaren and was seeking to switch teams.
Clearly discussions have happened behind closed doors this week with both drivers looking to make good ahead of the US Grand prix this weekend.
“Well, it has got nothing to do with you guys, but of course there were talks, which were inevitable, and the team held me accountable, which I think is fair,” Norris said.
“Then we made progress from there on, understanding what the repercussions were for myself and to avoid something definitely worse happening than what did.
“As I said after Singapore, this is the last thing I want to happen is to cause these kinds of controversial talks after the race, and I put just as much risk of putting myself out of the race as whoever I am racing against, whether it is Oscar or anyone else.
“The simple answer is that there was contact between the two cars and that’s something which we always want to avoid.”
Heading into the final six races of the season, Piastri leads the title standings with a 22-point advantage over Norris.
Asked about the incident in Singapore and whether he believes there is bias in the team, Piastri said: "We analysed the incident. There has been responsibility placed on Lando, ultimately, in that collision. But I'm very happy that there's no favouritism or bias.
"We had a lot of discussions, as you would expect. Very productive. I think we're very clear on how we want to go racing as a team. The incident we had in Singapore isn't how we want to go racing. Lando has taken responsibility for that, and so has the team. I think it's quite clear for us as a team that how lap one unfolded wasn't how we want to go racing."
While it remains to be seen what the repercussions were for Norris, it’s clear the McLaren PR machine is working overtime in America this weekend.
