Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising has trialled at Randwick this morning.
The worldβs highest rated sprinter, who has won 13 in a row and 14 of 16 career starts in Hong Kong, was beaten over 1000m but was never let go by jockey Zac Purton.
The Australian hoop joined Gareth Hall on SENTrack & RSNβs Giddy Up to give his immediate reaction to the trial defeat.
βHe hasnβt had a run for about a month and he hasnβt done too much serious work in that amount of time, so it was the first time heβs done anything competitive in a while,β Purton said.
βThe track was a little bit soft for him, heβs not totally at home on that ground. But I thought he trialled well enough. I wish heβd changed his leg, he didnβt, but thatβs him.β
Are there any concerns heading into The Everest after that trial?
βNo, I think heβll come on a bit from that,β Purton added.
βObviously itβs going to be a competitive race. The horses in Australia are peaking at the right time so hopefully we can draw a good gate, get a dry track and Iβm sure heβll improve a bit off that.β
Purton then gave his overall assessment of the trial: βPass mark, needs to improve.β
The David Hayes-trained gelding jumped from the widest gate and was handled quietly to narrowly finish third behind Randwick Guineas winner Linebacker and Everest contender Overpass.
The trial field - a mix of Everest and King Charles III contenders - had no shortage of stars with a combined 24 Group 1 victories. Also in the field was Mr Brightside, Fangirl, Joliestar and Angel Capital.
Despite the defeat, it was a fairly nice trial from the son of Shamexpress who was never let go at any stage.
βOnly narrowly beaten but untested,β race caller Darren Flindell said on the broadcast.
Ka Ying Rising remains a $1.50 favourite with most bookmakers for The Everest which is run at Randwick on October 18.
The trial winner, John OβShea and Tom Charltonβs Linebacker, is currently $21 for the King Charles III over the mile on the same day.
