Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim after 14-months in charge
Manchester United have sensationally sacked Ruben Amorim after a 14-month period which saw the Red Devils win 24 matches from 63 games.
The decision comes after the Red Devils drew with arch rivals Leeds United on Sunday night, which sees them sitting sixth on the Premier League table.
As reported by the Athletic’s David Ornstein, key executives at United informed the Portuguese manager on Monday morning English time that his services were no longer required.
Multiple reports suggested that tensions had been rising in previous weeks, with a break down in relationships between Amorim, Football Director Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada the catalyst to making the decision to part ways.
United have since said otherwise, confirming that due to expectations on the season and the stage of development that the club would want to be in right now, has ‘reluctantly’ caused them to pull the pin.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” United said in a statement released overnight.
Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.”
With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
Since the announcement of Amorim’s departure, United have confirmed that Darren Fletcher, a former United player, will be the interim head coach for the meantime.
United’s next game is against Burnley away from home on Thursday morning.
