CA CEO open to BBL expanding overseas

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenburg has not closed the door on the possibility of the Big Bash League becoming a trans-Tasman competition following rumours of potential expansion into New Zealand.
In July this year, Cricket Australia was handed a report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on how the domestic T20 competition could improve and continue to innovate.
The report handed down by BCG recommended that CA make multiple changes to the BBL, including allowing for private investment alongside changing the competition’s schedule.
Another recommendation it provided was expanding the competition from its original eight-team structure.
As a result of this, it has been reported by multiple outlets that NZ Cricket is planning on doing an independent assessment into whether it would be viable to have a team of their own in the Big Bash League.
When asked by Corey Parker as to whether a team from New Zealand would be added at some later point, Greenburg was open to that possibility but acknowledged that no decision had been made on any of the recommendations as of yet.
“We’ve certainly got an open mind to it,” Greenburg explained on SENQ Breakfast.
“We’re talking to all our state CEOs about how we best optimise the Big Bash and at the same time secure the game’s long-term future.
“I think it would be remiss of us if we weren’t looking at these opportunities presented by private investment.
“That’s not to say we’ve made a decision yet. But certainly, expanding the competition and markets like New Zealand are top of mind.
“So, over the next three to six months, I think we are going to see some work on that and make some decisions.”
Other expansion options that have been thrown up include having a team in Singapore alongside moving the Melbourne Renegades to Geelong.
The 15th edition of the Big Bash League gets underway from December 14 with the Perth Scorchers facing the Sydney Sixers.
The 11th season of Women’s Big Bash League begins on November 9 with a rematch of last year’s grand final between the Brisbane Heat and the Melbourne Renegades.
